The American Dream is something every single person on this earth lives for. It is something that can be achieved by even the smallest person. The American Dream is starting from nothing; no money, no anything, and going up the social class. Or it is just simply living the life you have always wanted.
Probably the most famous quote from Of Mice and Men is one that sort of drives the book. It is used in about every chapter of the book.
" 'An' live of the fatta the lan,' Lennie shouted" (Steinbeck 14).
This quote definitely drives the book and really makes the reader think that George and Lennie will achieve The American Dream. Unfortunately George and Lennie do not make it together.
For George and Lennie, The American Dream is something that they wanted to conquer together. They could have. They were so close to it and it was taken away from them. Critc Bryant N. Wyatt comments and states that unity is the way to achieve something that is worthwhile.
"A major theme (and one typical of Steinbeck) is that of the need for unity in pursuit of a common worthwhile goal" (Wyatt 352).
The common worthwhile goal back in the time frame for Of Mice and Men was The American Dream. No one wanted to work like Lennie and George did and no one wanted to do it alone.
